Product Overview
Alkyl ketene dimer wax powder (AKD wax powder) is the core raw material of AKD emulsion, and both are used in papermaking. In adhesive application, it forms an upstream and downstream relationship. At room temperature, it is a pale yellow, waxy solid. It has wide applications in the papermaking industry. The molecular structure has high activityβ-lactone ring,The ability to react with cellulose hydroxyl groups to form hydrophobic β-keto ester bonds is the fundamental source of paper's water resistance.
Technical indicators
| product | Appearance | purity% | Melting point℃ | Acid value (mgKOH/g) | Iodine value gI2/100g |
| AKD Wax Powder 1840 | pale yellow waxy solid | ≥90 | ≥47 | ≤5.0 | ≥45 |
| AKD Wax Powder 1865 | pale yellow waxy solid | ≥90 | ≥50 | ≤5.0 | ≥44 |
In 1840, C18 accounted for 40% and C16 accounted for 60%.
In 1865, C18 accounted for 65% and C16 accounted for 35%.
Because of differences in carbon chains, wax powders have different melting points, resulting in slight variations in their performance. Higher C18 content generally leads to better performance, but also makes them more difficult to emulsify when preparing AKD emulsions.
Used in the production of AKD emulsions and AKD surface sizing agents. Due toWax powder is insoluble in water and its reactivity cannot be directly utilized. It needs to be emulsified into a stable aqueous dispersion (emulsion) in order to be evenly dispersed in the wet end of papermaking and come into contact with the fibers to exert its good water resistance.
AKD wax powder → (melt emulsification) → AKD emulsion → (wet-end addition) → waterproof cellulose products
AKD wax powder is the active substance that carries hydrophobic properties, while AKD emulsion or AKD surface sizing agent are its essential application forms in the modern papermaking industry. The quality of the wax powder (purity, alkyl chain distribution) directly determines the performance of the final emulsion and the sizing effect.
In the papermaking process, using AKD sizing agents produced from high-purity AKD wax powder has the following advantages:
The amount of sizing agent consumed per ton of paper is relatively small, and the amount of hydrolysate produced is also relatively small, which has little impact on the air permeability of the paper forming wire and the wet end dehydration of the paper.
The impact on COD in the papermaking white water system is relatively small.
Wet-end formed paper has better water resistance, which can reduce paper breakage in the paper machine press and drying sections.
It can reduce the chance of wax spots appearing on the paper, reduce paper slippage and sticking to the sizing roller, and ensure the normal operation of the paper machine.
It can effectively prevent the occurrence of sizing reversal and false sizing.
Shelf life is 6 months. Store in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight. During transportation, prevent damage to the packaging and avoid contact with acids, alkalis, and other similar substances.
