I. Basic Chemical Identification

Common Name: Polyvinyl Alcohol, Abbreviation: PVA / PVOH
Chinese Name: Polyvinyl Alcohol
CAS No.: 9002-89-5 (general grade); 25213-24-5 (partially hydrolyzed grade)
Structural Formula: , Monomer Unit: , Monomer Molecular Weight: 44.05; Overall Molecular Weight: 5,000–200,000 (varies with degree of polymerization)
Synonyms: Vinyl alcohol polymer, PVAL, raw material for vinylon resin

II. Physical Appearance & Basic Physical Properties

1. Appearance Form

Odorless white solid, available in three mainstream forms: granules, fine powder and floccules; free of impurities and agglomerates.

2. Key Physical Parameters

Density: 1.19–1.31 g/cm³
Thermal Properties: Starts dehydration, yellowing and decomposition at 150℃; melting point 212–267℃; complete decomposition at high temperature of 340℃
Solubility: Soluble only in hot water at 60–95℃, barely soluble in cold water; slightly soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide; insoluble in most organic solvents including ethanol, acetone, benzene, grease, hydrocarbons and ether.
Aqueous Solution Properties: 4% aqueous solution is transparent and viscous, oil-resistant and organic solvent-resistant; the formed film is colorless, transparent, with high tensile strength, antistatic property and excellent printability.
Hygroscopicity: Prone to moisture absorption at ambient temperature; stable for 24 months under dry storage.

III. Core Chemical Properties

The molecule contains abundant hydroxyl groups (-OH) with high reactivity, capable of esterification, etherification, acetalization (for PVB/PVF production) and borax crosslinking reactions; water resistance is greatly improved after crosslinking.
Resistant to weak acids and weak bases; molecular degradation occurs in concentrated strong acids or concentrated strong alkalis.
Environmental Characteristics: Biodegradable with no bioaccumulation; classified as Group 3 carcinogen (no definite carcinogenic evidence); food-grade products comply with Chinese National Standard GB 1886.383-2025 and FDA food contact certification.

IV. General Industry Nomenclature for Product Grades

Grade Format: XX-YY
XX = Average Degree of Polymerization ÷ 100 (17 stands for DP 1700, 24 for DP 2400, 05 for DP 500)
YY = Mole percentage of degree of hydrolysis
88 Series (partially hydrolyzed, 86–89 mol%): Cold-water soluble, low viscosity, strong emulsification and dispersion performance, e.g. 1788, 2488, 0588
99 Series (fully hydrolyzed, 98–99.8 mol%): Soluble only in hot water, high film strength and superior water resistance, e.g. 1799, 2099, 2699
