Adipic acid is the core raw material for papermaking wet strength agent (PAE). It is not added directly into pulp. By synthesizing PAE resin, a cross-linked structure is formed among paper fibers to greatly improve water resistance and wet strength. It is mainly used for specialty papers such as cup base paper, food packaging paper, medical paper and water-resistant cardboard. It can also be used for modified starch sizing to reduce linting and dusting of paper.

Industry NewsEnvironmental upgrading: Strict control of organohalide residues for food-grade paper. Adipic-acid-based low-chlorine eco-friendly wet strength agents are the mainstream development trend.Cost linkage: Price fluctuations of adipic acid directly affect the cost of papermaking wet strength agents, causing changes in paper mill consumable costs.Technology R&D: Research on bio-based and lignin-derived adipic acid is in progress, which is expected to realize recycling of papermaking raw materials.
