Global Dynamics of Adipic Acid

Recently, the global adipic acid industry has witnessed a number of important international developments, covering trade policy adjustments, production capacity layout optimization, market scale changes and industrial green transformation, which directly shape the global supply pattern and development trend of adipic acid.

In terms of trade policies, the European Commission has recently issued a final anti-dumping ruling on Chinese adipic acid and imposed differentiated anti-dumping duties, which officially took effect on May 6, with the investigation period covering the whole year of 2024. It is reported that around 80% of adipic acid imported into the EU market relies on China, and this final ruling will significantly affect the global trade flow of adipic acid. Meanwhile, Brazil’s foreign trade authority has launched the second anti-dumping sunset review on adipic acid imported from multiple countries. The dumping investigation period spans from July 2024 to June 2025, and the injury investigation period from July 2020 to June 2025, aiming to further improve trade protection for the domestic adipic acid industry.
In terms of production capacity layout, major adjustments have taken place in Europe. A chemical base in Germany announced that it will shut down its adipic acid production lines by the end of 2025, along with the production of supporting related products, affecting a certain number of employees. After the shutdown, the supply of adipic acid in Europe will be maintained by its joint venture base in France. The main driving factors include soaring energy costs, global market restructuring and the need to improve the profitability of the industrial value chain.
The global market scale maintains steady growth. The global adipic acid market reached approximately 5.79 billion US dollars in 2025, projected to rise to 6.04 billion US dollars in 2026 and exceed 8.57 billion US dollars by 2034, with an average annual growth rate of about 4.4%. In terms of regional pattern, as a core player in global adipic acid production and export, China accounted for 40.5% of the global production capacity in 2024, with its export volume increasing by 8.7% year-on-year in 2025, firmly maintaining its position as the world’s largest exporter. At present, the pressure of anti-dumping and countervailing trade frictions from Europe and America continues to rise, and green and low-carbon development has become the core focus of industrial competition.
In terms of industrial development trends, adipic acid production capacity continues to expand in Asia. Meanwhile, some Southeast Asian countries plan to build downstream supporting industries for adipic acid to ease cost pressures and optimize the regional industrial chain layout. Driven by policies such as the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the U.S. Climate Act, the R&D and commercialization of low-carbon adipic acid have accelerated. Green technologies including bio-based adipic acid and closed-loop recycling processes have become key development directions, leading the global adipic acid industry toward low-carbon, environmentally friendly and sustainable development.
